Interesting every example you mention has two of something. So, are they plural ? or do they just end in "s" ? or are they verb construction (as in the case of "shears") ?
As someone mentioned, I know it's different in non-English languages, similar to count nouns v. mass nouns, how zero is treated. For a laugh, read about Ukranian forms of plural.
