It's table of contents (things that can be counted). Nothing confusing about it! You have the intro, different chapters, appendices etc. Whoever adamantly claims it's 'content' (non-countable) is wrong. Just because it sounds right to you, or your teacher told you it's right, does not make it right. Sorry.
