About Pain in the English
I was born in Japan, so English is my second language. I've always needed someone to proofread my writing, but it has never been easy. On one end of the spectrum, the editor would spend many hours editing a short essay, and change what I was trying to say. On the other end, they would do what Microsoft Word can do automatically and nothing more. What is the right balance?
As a customer, I want my editor to think like I do. Everyone has a different style of thinking, and for many people, their writing reflects this more accurately than their speaking does. Some editors do not honor or recognize the different ways of thinking, and have tried to force their thinking process on me. That, to me, is a waste of time that I'd rather not pay for. A great editor can take my style of thinking and apply what she sees from her vantage point. She can catch errors, identify ambiguities, increase clarity, and reduce inefficiencies, all through my way of thinking, as if I were standing in her place.
We are all limited in what we can see. It's like creating a sculpture without being able to see it from behind. Editors can stand behind our sculptures and correct errors and ambiguities as if we were right there. We all need editors, no matter how good we think we are. They can put our own thinking in perspective.
Pain in the English started as an online forum to discuss the gray areas of the English language, and now we are offering proofreading and copy editing services. We cater to people like me who are not professional writers but need their writing to be professional. In today’s digital age, we need to do things at scale in order to succeed. Speaking does not scale well. A half an hour talking to someone is a half an hour of your life spent only for that one person. With writing, the same half an hour can indefinitely scale online. So it is worth it, in my view, to spend the extra time improving it with another set of eyes.
